Mike and Michelle had a super fun wedding at a golf course right up the road from my house this past summer, and instead of my trying to write about it, I asked them to write me a little story of how they met and how they planned a wedding in such a short period of time!
Story from the bride and groom by the bride and groom.
We met through mutual friends in 2014, and clicked immediately. One of our first dates was hiking at Porcupine Creek (in Kananaskis Country, Alberta), and when Mike was taking photos of Michelle’s pomeranian on his phone she knew he was something special. Even Michelle’s mom asked if Honey approved of this new man, and she did. Mike thought Michelle was beautiful, intelligent, funny and kind. Mike says she’s perfectly imperfect, “we have our own private/ unique inside jokes and finish each other’s sentences regularly… to a fault sometimes. Mike knew Michelle was the one a couple months into dating. On an early date he had mistakenly popped an olive pit (from some unknown person at the table) into his mouth thinking it was a pistachio. She quickly realized what he’d done, put her hand out and allowed him to spit it into her hands. Michelle knew Mike was the one when 4 months into dating, she brought him to Grenada for friend’s wedding and then to San Francisco to meet her parents (and extended family). He charmed everyone with his charisma, kind eyes, and sense of humour. She was so proud to have such a wonderful man by her side.
It wasn’t long before they were talking about moving in together, and despite some particularly trying times, they have been resilient and so dedicated to one another. As much as they knew that marriage would have its challenges, they never stop learning, becoming better for each other, and growing closer.
Mike proposed on Feb 17 2017 in front of their house in Calgary. He wanted to surprise Michelle and knew she’d see right through some elaborate plan. On the way home from picking up take out and walking the dog, Mike proposed as they got to the bottom of the stairs on their front stoop… Michelle still with dog poop bag in hand. Thankfully she hadn’t seen it coming, and much to Mike’s relief said “yes!” after some tears.
They were going to do a destination wedding a year later, but when Michelle’s mom began planning a Peterborough engagement party we decided to turn that into the real thing with 3 months to plan. Luckily Michelle’s mom was a wedding planner extraordinaire. The couple also had a lovely Calgary garden reception in Mike’s parents’ beautiful backyard.
